There are several models of PCC in the literature such as the LEARN model, RESPECT model, and Teach Ask Teach or Teach-Back method. Each model enhances the patient-clinician encounter by ensuring understanding.
The Learn model is a method of patient communication that increases awareness of cultural aspects of care and focuses on partnering with the patient in treatment (King A, 2013).
LEARN MODEL (JOHNSON, 2018)
Listen with empathy and understanding of the patient’s perception of the problem and what they
hope to gain from the visit.
“What do you feel may be causing your problem?”
Allow time for the patient to describe their issue. If there are differences in how you and the patient understand the problem, explore those differences.
Explain your perception of the problem.
Try to link your explanation to something the patient already said. Keep in mind that the patient's understanding of the condition is influenced by their cultural, ethnic, socioeconomic, and educational background.
Acknowledge and discuss differences and similarities between your understanding of the diagnosis and the treatment options and the patient’s understanding.
“Can you tell me more about...” “Thanks for telling me about...”
Recommend treatment. This is collaborative in nature involving the patient and possibly the family.
“This is what I recommend, but tell me, would that work for you?”
Negotiate treatment by developing a treatment plan that involves your goals and the patient’s goals.
“Would you like to try...?
The next model, the RESPECT Model, is used to develop clinician rapport with patients with different cultural backgrounds and to increase awareness of clinician biases. (Obstet Gynecol 2014)
