In the majority of frameworks described in a 2015 review by Alizadeh and Chavan, cultural awareness, cultural knowledge, and cultural skills as the most important elements of cultural competence (Alizadeh S, et. al., 2016).
   KEY ELEMENTS OF CULTURAL COMPETENCE*
     DEFINITION
    Cultural awareness
 Individual’s awareness of their own views, biases, prejudices, and beliefs toward other cultures.
    Cultural knowledge
       The acquisition of knowledge about other cultures.
      Cultural skills
     Communications and behavioral ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures.
      Cultural safety
  Safe service to be defined by those who receive the service. Focuses on potential differences between health clinicians and patients that may impact care.
       ADDITIONAL ELEMENTS IN CULTURAL COMPETENCE MODELS
      Cultural desire/motivation
    Individuals’ motivation to engage, participate and learn about cultural diversity and raise their cultural awareness
    Cultural encounter/interaction
      Face-to-face contacts or other types of interactions with culturally different people.
