Succession Planning and Leadership
Leaders must understand the diversity among stakeholders, patients, employees, and communities in
order to ensure a pipeline of leaders who represent the community served and who are able to
identify relevant cultural needs and challenges (Nair, et al. 2019 ). When succession planning, it is
important to create leadership opportunities to retain talent and require a diverse candidate pool for
all leadership roles. Additionally, robust performance management systems with honest performance
evaluations allow organizations to identify high-potential leaders, differentiate between their
leadership skills and competencies, and determine leadership development needs. Additional success
factors for succession planning include the commitment of the board and senior leadership,
experienced HR leadership, investment in leadership development, creation of leadership
opportunities, and a long-term vision for the organization (Schlichting 2020
Greer 2018, Golden 2014,
Bleich 2019).
