P. 3

   Dear Colleagues,
As we look back to fiscal year 2019, the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry saw its member institutions, volunteers, corporate contributors, and staff advance optometric education in profound and meaning- ful ways. We launched our public awareness campaign, Optometry Gives Me Life, in March, the same time we held our first of its kind Futures Summit – Opening our Eyes
-- bringing together nearly 200 leaders in optometric education and practice to discuss challenges and solu- tions that will help us thrive in the coming years.
ASCO cannot and does not succeed without our volunteers. Our faculty/administrator volunteers who participate in our committees, special interest groups (SIGs) and task forces, and professional groups are
the backbone and workhorses of our Association. Of particular note, we added the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion SIG as well as the Interprofessional Education Collaborative Practice SIG and both groups are poised to develop initiatives and best practices in their areas of expertise. The year 2020 will see great things from these new SIGs.
Speaking of interprofessional education, the Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice
Dr. Elizabeth Hoppe
ASCO President
Founding Dean of Western University of Health Sciences, College of Optometry
Committee began a tool kit that all of our institutions can use to broaden their interprofessional education programs, and the Board of Directors approved it
in June. In doing this, we expanded our reach from
the optometric education sector to 11 other medical education fields. This will help our member institutions better educate students to recognize how eye and vision health does not exist in a vacuum, but is import- ant in assessing the overall health of a patient.
Lastly, we awarded six Special Recognition Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award, celebrated the retirements of three colleagues and mourned the death of a well-loved Dean from one of our institutions.
We deeply appreciate ASCO faculty, administra- tors, and student volunteers who continuously work ensuring our success of ASCO year-round. We thank our corporate contributors who support us and our member institutions, as well. Thank you for making ASCO a truly exceptional organization.
This Annual Report highlights ASCO’s work and accomplishments in fiscal year 2019. We look forward to continuing to share ASCO’s achievements with you for years to come.
