INCLUSIVE CLINIC PRACTICES
Inclusive health care means that the clinicians’ methods and approaches to care, and the clinical environment have been adapted to ensure equitable access and full and meaningful participation by all patients. Since each patient brings a unique set of needs, there are a variety of ways to further adapt the examination, and sometimes the environment, to address those needs so the patient can receive the full benefit of an optometric exam. Several things to consider in ensuring an inclusive environment is the physical accessibility of the clinic, and how accessible the services provided are to a range of patients. In anticipating a patient's needs, we can utilize a user-centered design framework to meet those needs for most patients, ensuring the flexibility to learn as we go and adapt where needed. The sense of belonging that is created for patients when their full self is recognized in the details of the exam experience is invaluable.
Below is a list of examples to think about when considering how the clinic environment can be more inclusive.
